Arizona is Looking to Improve Parking Issues for the Transportation Industry

Parking issues have been a danger to truck drivers and citizens across the country for decades, but new efforts led by congress are offering hope for better parking infrastructure. Arizona is one state leading the charge to improve America’s parking capacity. Here’s how their investments will affect drivers around the country.

Parking Issues Are a Top Concern for Drivers

For the third year in a row, the American Transportation Research Institute found that parking issues were the number one concern for truckers in the US. This doesn’t come as a surprise; recent research has shown a massive lack of parking spots. One survey by the Federal Highway Administration estimated 313,000 parking spaces exist for trucks nationwide, while American Trucking Associations estimate one space for every 11 drivers.

Department of Transportation Action

In response to a letter from the American Trucking Association and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association citing their findings of massive parking issues for drivers across the country, the Department of Transportation (DOT) rolled out investments to improve these conditions. The investments come in the form of $40 million in grants to be distributed to states interested in the funding. The DOT also rolled out guidance for states on achieving better parking availability.

House Bill

Introduced by senators Mark Kelly of Arizona and Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act seeks $175 million to improve parking infrastructure for truckers. The bill has received support from the American Trucking Association and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, praising the senator’s support for the trucking industry. Kelly and Lummis said they hoped the investments would continue improving the supply chain and the safety conditions. Should the bill pass, funds will be distributed in 2023.

The Effects of the Legislation

These significant investment projects, pushed into motion by Arizona, will improve the safety and ease with that truck drivers can find parking and rest. While commercial truck stops are expanding and reservation systems are being introduced, some feel that reservations shouldn’t be necessary. Investments are expected to continue to hit the industry, and drivers should have hope their fight is working.
