Hiring Women in Logistics (2)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that women in the manufacturing and transportation sectors were highly underrepresented. It’s 2021 and this needs to change!

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) conducted a report on working women and found that when women’s labor force participation rises, the economy and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rises too. Cut to 2022: many logistics companies are hoping to recover from a significant decrease in job applicants, which is why these same companies should start hiring more women!

Read our take on how to start hiring women in logistics.

Changing the Narrative

Traditionally, the logistics industry has been associated with physical labor and is considered a masculine sector. For reference, when people think about positions such as forklift operators and truck drivers, these roles are primarily male-dominated.

To change the narrative, companies should think about the way they are marketing their current open positions. If you want people to know you’re interested in hiring women, you have to be direct! Think about sharing real success stories of current women on your logistics team that you think would spark interest from job seekers.

Offering Fair Wages and Salaries

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, chances are you have heard about the “Great Resignation.” The Great Resignation, also known as the Big Quit, is the ongoing trend of employees voluntarily leaving their jobs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports say there are several reasons why people do not want to return to work; two of them being they fear spreading COVID-19 and they would rather work remotely.

In 2020, according to a Pew Research center analysis, women earned 84% of what men earned. Based on this estimate, it would take an extra 42 days of work for women to earn what men did in 2020.

With that being said, it should be a high priority as an employer to offer fair pay to your female workers if you want to fill your hiring gaps.
