What Events Are at the Truck Driver Championships?

The 2023 truck drivers championship will have nine different categories

  • straight truck
  • 3-axle semi-trailer class
  • 4-axle semi-trailer class
  • 5-axle semi-trailer class (van)

How Are You Judged?

During the competitions, drivers are given a chance to demonstrate their driving and inspection skills and professionalism through a set of tests. The drivers undergo a written examination, a pre-trip inspection test, and finally, the most visible – the skills test. This is where they are tested on their ability to maneuver and control their vehicles under several difficult test situations.

When Are the State Competitions?

State competitions will take place throughout the spring and early summer. Here is the state schedule. Some states require a regional competition to qualify for the state competition. This varies by state, so check with your trucking association.

Should I Compete?

As in previous years, companies may send up to three drivers per class for the competition. Drivers must have the appropriate CDL and endorsements for the class they are entered in. The championships aim to incentivize safe truck driving practices, so drivers must be accident-free for at least one year before the competition.

If you meet these qualifications, absolutely consider competing. Meeting with a community of truck drivers throughout your state and having a weekend to raise awareness for safe driving practices is a great way to bring fun into your job.
