Some CDL endorsements can lead to higher-paying freight, while others may not change your paycheck much at all. Before you spend time and money earning another endorsement, find out which ones employers actually pay a premium for.
This guide explains what each endorsement allows you to haul, which ones often lead to better-paying opportunities, and how to choose the right one for your career goals.
How CDL Endorsements Can Increase Your Pay
A CDL endorsement qualifies you for specialized equipment, freight, and driving jobs. Research shows that specialized carriers, the kind that need drivers with endorsements, tend to pay more than standard truckload carriers. ¹ An endorsement will not increase your pay by itself. But it can help you qualify for work that often pays more.
A CDL endorsement can also help you:
- Qualify for specialized freight.
- Operate tank vehicles or multiple trailers.
- Develop skills that fewer drivers have.
- Compete for higher-paying driving jobs.
Common endorsements include:
- T – Doubles or Triples
- N – Tank Vehicles
- H – Hazardous Materials (Hazmat)
- X – Tank Vehicles and Hazardous Materials
Some employers require a specific endorsement before they can even consider you for a job. So which CDL endorsements pay the most? The answer depends on the freight type, your location, the carrier, and your experience.
Which CDL Endorsements Are Worth Getting?
Several endorsements can expand your job options. But three of them consistently open the door to specialized freight and stronger pay.
Hazmat Endorsement
The H endorsement lets qualified drivers transport hazardous materials that require placards. This includes fuel, chemicals, gases, and other regulated cargo.
Many employers pay Hazmat drivers more because fewer drivers meet the requirements. The job also comes with greater responsibility for safety, security, and regulatory compliance.
To earn a Hazmat endorsement, you must complete approved entry-level driver training first. Then you take your state knowledge test. You must also pass a Transportation Security Administration threat assessment, which includes a background check and a processing fee. State testing and training fees add to the total cost.
Drivers who hold a Hazmat endorsement must also complete recurrent training on a regular basis, and whenever their duties change. Before you invest in the endorsement, check whether employers in your area actively need Hazmat drivers and pay a premium for that qualification.
Tanker Endorsement
The N endorsement qualifies you to haul liquids or gases in tank vehicles. Tanker drivers transport products such as fuel, milk, water, food-grade liquids, chemicals, and industrial materials.
Tank driving takes extra skill. Liquid moves inside the tank when the truck speeds up, brakes, or turns. Drivers call this movement surge. Surge can throw off vehicle balance and increase stopping distance.
A tanker endorsement delivers the most value in areas with fuel distributors, farms, food processors, chemical plants, or manufacturing sites. If few employers in your market use tank vehicles, the endorsement may not boost your earning potential.
Tanker driving also demands sharper defensive habits behind the wheel. Sudden stops or sharp turns carry more risk with a full tank than with a standard dry van. Employers often look for drivers who already show strong safety records before assigning tanker routes.
If you plan to haul hazardous liquids, you will usually need an X endorsement instead. The X endorsement combines both the Tanker and Hazmat endorsements.
Doubles or Triples Endorsement
The T endorsement lets drivers pull double or triple trailers where state laws permit them.
Many less-than-truckload carriers use double trailers on linehaul routes between freight terminals. These routes often pay well. They usually call for experienced drivers who can handle scheduled overnight runs.
Some linehaul positions require the T endorsement. Others do not. It depends on the equipment and freight involved.
Before you invest time in this endorsement, check what equipment your target employers actually run. A carrier that never pulls doubles will not pay you more for having the T endorsement, no matter how strong your driving record is.
Choose the Right Endorsement for Your Career
The highest-paying endorsement depends on the type of driving job you want:
- Pick Hazmat if you want to haul regulated materials and employers near you pay more for it.
- Pick Tanker if you want to move liquid cargo and your market has strong demand for tanker drivers.
- Pick Doubles or Triples if you want linehaul or LTL work that calls for multiple trailers.
The best endorsement matches your career goals and the jobs open where you plan to work.
